
FishNet 4C was initiated in 1998 by County Supervisors in Mendocino, Sonoma, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, in response to the Federal ESA listing of coho salmon (1996) and steelhead trout (1997).
Coho salmon within the Central Coast region share a similar genetic make-up, and thus are listed collectively in what is known as the Central California Coastal Evolutionarily Significant Unit (CCCESU) .
Monterey County, while technically located in the South-Central California ESU, participates in FishNet because of its proximity to Santa Cruz and their shared coastline with the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. Mendocino is split between the Central and North Coast and participates more actively in the Five Counties Salmonid Conservation Program http://www.5counties.org.
County participants in the FishNet Program include County Supervisors and staff from Planning, Public Works, Parks, Open Space and Water Agencies. The counties focus their efforts on services they provide that can affect salmonid habitat. These efforts include:
